Advantages of Surgical Abortion:

Your surgical abortion will be performed by a skilled physician in a single day.

The surgical procedure typically takes only 3-5 minutes.

Throughout the entire process and recovery period, our experienced staff will monitor and support you.

Local anesthesia is administered to manage any discomfort during the procedure.

Surgical abortion is over 99% effective.

Over-the-counter pain relievers can be used for any discomfort following the procedure.

Surgical abortion is considered one of the safest surgical procedures.

At Options for Women, your well-being is our utmost concern, and we are here to support you every step of the way. Your comfort, safety, and privacy are our top priorities as you make this important decision about your reproductive healthcare.

Disadvantages of Surgical Abortion:

Like all surgical procedures, there is a risk of complications, although they are relatively rare.

After the procedure, you will need to be monitored in the office for about an hour.

The procedure is invasive and can be painful, although anesthesia is provided to manage discomfort.

You may experience bleeding and cramping for approximately one week.

A follow-up appointment is required three weeks after the procedure.

What You Need to Know:

  • Please inform our telephone counselor of any medical problems and medications you take regularly when scheduling your appointment.

  • In the state of New Jersey, 24-hour consent and parental consent are not required.

  • Avoid eating or drinking after midnight before your scheduled appointment.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat shoes/sneakers.

  • Bring or wear socks and bring a sanitary napkin/pad.

  • Please do not bring children with you to the clinic.

  • Your visit at the center will last approximately 2 – 2 ½ hours.

What To Expect

Upon arrival, you will complete a patient record. To save time, you can fill out this form in the privacy of your home and bring it to your appointment.

We will perform basic lab work to determine your blood type, including the Rh factor.

You will meet with our doctor, who will conduct an ultrasound exam to determine the length of your pregnancy. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about the surgical abortion procedure.

A dedicated counselor will speak with you privately to explain the procedure, what to expect afterward, and discuss future birth control options. This counseling is conducted one-on-one, ensuring you have the freedom to discuss any concerns or issues related to the abortion.

Local anesthesia will be administered.

The physician will gently empty your uterus using aspiration or suction, which may cause cramping similar to strong menstrual cramps. The entire procedure usually takes just a few minutes.

After the abortion, you will rest in a private recovery area, ensuring your comfort. You will be the only patient in this area, and our staff will monitor you to ensure your well-being.

Rest for the remainder of the day, and most women are able to return to daily activities the following day. You will receive detailed aftercare instructions, and our team is available to answer any questions or concerns.

A follow-up examination is necessary three weeks after the procedure to ensure your complete healing.
